Indicators can be used one at a time or in combination with one another. To better understand this, it is important to know that indicators come in two very different types: overlaid and independent. An overlaid indicator is one that is put in the same space as the price chart itself. A good example is the moving average indicator. This line is plotted directly on top of the price chart and is thus laid over the original chart. An independent indicator, on the other hand, appears in its own separate window. This window can appear above or below the price window so that the time series lines up, but it is not within the price chart itself. If you choose to use more than one indicator, those that you choose can be any combination of overlaid or independent indicators. For example, you might choose to put (1) a 20-day moving average, (2) a 50-day moving average, (3) a 200-day moving average, (4) a MACD Histogram, and (5) a RSI study on a chart. Of these ve indicators, the rst three are overlaid and the last two are independent (thus, you would wind up with three stacked chart panes: one with the price chart and the other two with the MACD and the RSI). One of the most popular and simple indicators is the moving average. There are a number of kinds of moving averages (simple, exponential, displaced, bands, and so on) but, as was mentioned earlier, the purpose of this chapter isn t to address every possible permutation of every indicator, but instead to understand the basics so that you can apply that knowledge to any of the hundreds of indicators available.
